Movie Picks

Land and Freedom: A young English communist travels to Spain and joins an anarchist militia to fight against the fascists in the Spanish Civil War. This film is very interesting and well made, and I think it gives a really fair picture of the anarchist movement in Spain. Especially the tensions between the anarchists and the Stalinists (which ultimately led to Franco’s victory) play a major part in the story.

SLC Punk: Two punks and self-labeled anarchists in Salt Lake City spend their days beating up rednecks, belittling “posers” and doing drugs. You quickly realize they’re just posers themselves and have no clue about either Punk or Anarchism, but the movie is still fun to watch because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It still misses the point for the most part though, especially Anarchy is completely misrepresented. But it also made me think about a lot of stuff that’s wrong with most of the Punk “movement”, and I certainly have to give it credit for that…

Christopher Nolan rules

If you don’t know who Christopher Nolan is: he’s the guy who directed and wrote (together with his brother) Memento, one of the most original movies from the 90s.
I finally watched Batman Begins yesterday, and regret that I didn’t do so sooner. This is really the best Batman movie ever, if you liked those by Burton you’ll love this (nevermind the Schumacher movies…)! I have already high hopes for The Dark Knight, coming out next year.
But now I just watched Nolan’s newest film The Prestige about two rivaling stage magicians. The story is absolutely brilliant and full of surprising twists, and the cast was also awesome. Christian Bale and Michael Caine also played in Batman Begins, I really love their Welsh accents. And of course I like every film with Scarlett Johannson in it. Also watch out for David Bowie as Nikola Tesla!
